So the question is, what did the crowd understand that phrase to mean?
Did the crowd take it as a confusing gaffe, a ridiculous mis-statement?  From the crowd reaction alone it seems that they understood his point - people who stand for liberty and freedom identify with the residents of West Berlin.
It was afterwards that the pundits and talking heads poked fun.
The end isn't "nigh".  We are already in it, knee-high!
