Many thanks to everyone commented, especially to SHL! (ah, Steven, I really hope you actually know what my name sounds like and "Kesnii" is just a typo!). So, jails are for people awaiting trial and serving short sentences, and prisons are for long-term incarceration. At least in the US. Got it.
